Pemuteran

A peaceful coastal village nestled between mountains and sea, home to Bali's largest shallow reef area

Things to do in Pemuteran

Pemuteran Bay is one of the hidden gems of Bali. A place with beautiful scenery, award winning coral reefs and a serene beach far away from the hustle and bustle of South Bali. The perfect place to see a still unspoiled Bali that offers many unique experiences.

Pemuteran is ideal for nature excursions, trekking at the National Park, swimming, snorkelling & diving or exploring the sacred temples in the area. The Ijen crater on Java can be visited on an overnight trip (departing at 11 PM and returning at 11 AM the next day) and offers one of the most impressive sights in Indonesia.

Sacred Temples of Pemuteran

The area around Pemuteran is home to several remarkable temples, each with its own unique character. The magnificent Pulaki Temple complex, nestled between mountains and sea, exemplifies the Balinese concept of "Nyegara Gunung" - the sacred meeting point of mountain and ocean energies. Together with Pura Pabean and the ancient Pura Segara, these temples form a spiritual triangle overlooking the bay.

Other notable temples include the "hot spring temple" of Pemuteran, the 15th-century Melanting Temple favored by traders, and the jungle temples of Belatung and Kerta Kawat. For an unforgettable experience, climb to Puncak Manik Temple - the hundreds of steps lead to breathtaking views. Note that visitors must wear a sarong or scarf to enter temple grounds, and the late afternoon (around 5 pm) often offers the most serene atmosphere for temple visits.

Coral reef restoration project

Marine Life & Reef Restoration

Pemuteran Bay and Sumberkima Bay in the next village offer some of Bali's most vibrant marine ecosystems, making them a paradise for snorkelers and divers.

Pemuteran Bay is home to the world-renowned Biorock project, which has received recognition from the United Nations for its success in restoring damaged coral reefs. Using innovative technology that stimulates coral growth through low-voltage electricity, this project has helped rejuvenate the underwater world.

In the neighboring Sumberkima Bay, the local NGO Metamorfosa Bali has been leading marine conservation efforts, combining reef restoration with hill reforestation to create a more sustainable ecosystem. Their work plays a crucial role in preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of the area.
