Ijen Crater Java

The most amazing Indonesian volcano is the Ijen Crater or Kawah Ijen (2,600m or 8,660ft tall). The “Green Crater” from Eastern Java, has a one-kilometer-wide turquoise-colored acid crater lake and an active sulphur mine.

Due to its easy accessibility the crater is regularly visited by tourists. The track to the crater is about 3 km of which only about 1.5km is a bit of a steep climb. The hike is along a well-used path that is marked almost every few hundred meters.

Past the halfway mark hikers have some excellent views of distant mountains and extinct volcanoes as well as a former Volcanology viewing post which serves drinks. Hardworking sulphur miners displaying their great strength, balance and work ethic as they go about their business trying to earn their living.

View at the top of the mountain is breathtaking. A comment from a visitor: “one of the most beautiful landscape ever seen!” you must arrive early in the morning, on the crater to see the sulfur lake. To be able to see the blue flames in the crater you should leave the villa at 11 o’clock in the evening.

Your approximate arrival time back at the villa will be around noon. You can discuss this trip with our manager.
